This portrait shows a now unknown Roman woman. She has mature features and a slightly down-turned mouth which makes her appear serious. Her elaborate hairstyle counters this a little and confers status via its complexity. It also helps to date the portrait to the reign of Trajan, emperor from 98 to 117 CE
