This portrait head is long, slim and startlingly modern in style, the strong brows combining with the small mouth to give it a real intensity. It is the best known of a group of portraits which were once thought to represent court-eunuch and writer, Eutropius, who was active in the court of the emperor Valens, 364-378 CE
